The Art of Bharatanatyam Lives Here
Classical training rooted in tradition, shaped for the next generation.
Patient. Personal. Deeply Committed.
"Every student deserves strong basics, patient guidance, and steady progress. Not just the ones who pick it up quickly."
Smt. K.S. Akalya is the founder and head instructor of Riya Bharatanatyam Academy. She built this academy around a clear purpose: to give every girl, regardless of natural ability, a genuine and lasting foundation in Bharatanatyam.
What parents notice from the very first class is that Akalya knows each child individually. In a group of ten, she tracks where every girl is in her learning, corrects posture and footwork personally, and adjusts her teaching to match each student's pace. No child sits in the back and goes unnoticed.
She earns the trust of hesitant five-year-olds and keeps teenagers engaged through years of demanding training. Many families stay for the full journey, from first Adavu to Arangetram, because of the relationship their daughter builds with her.

What We Believe About Teaching
"Bharatanatyam is not just a performance art. It is a spiritual practice, a cultural inheritance, and a lifelong companion when taught with the right intention."
Our Vision
To give every girl a living connection to her culture, expressed through the grace and discipline of Bharatanatyam. Every student who leaves this academy should carry her heritage not as a memory of childhood classes, but as something alive in how she moves through the world.
We teach Bharatanatyam as a living tradition, not as a weekend activity. It has the power to shape how a young girl carries herself, expresses herself, and connects with the stories her culture has carried for generations.
For girls between 5 and 18, the years spent at this academy build far more than dance technique. They build discipline, stage confidence, emotional expression, and a sense of belonging to something ancient and meaningful.
This is why we keep batches small, progress methodical, and feedback personal. There are no shortcuts in our curriculum. But there is always encouragement, always patience, and always a path forward.
Strong Foundations First
We never rush the Adavus. Every student masters the basics before moving forward, because technique built correctly stays for life.
Feeling Before Perfection
Abhinaya is taught as genuine inner expression, not as a rehearsed face. We want students to feel what they perform, not just execute it.
A Tradition Worth Passing On
Bharatanatyam has survived centuries because each generation of teachers took it seriously. We see ourselves as part of that responsibility.
A Place Your Daughter Belongs
We keep this a warm, focused environment where girls feel seen, respected, and genuinely cared for. Every girl's journey is her own.
Where Every Girl Finds Her Strength
Riya Bharatanatyam Academy is a classical dance school for girls between the ages of 5 and 18, located in Manikonda, Hyderabad. We follow the authentic Kalakshetra tradition, grounding each student in precise Adavus, expressive Abhinaya, and the depth of the Natya Shastra.
Over 100 girls train with us today. We have built a 4.9-star rating on Google not through advertising but through one simple thing: parents see their daughters grow. In technique, in confidence, and in their connection to a tradition that is genuinely their own.
Batches are kept small by design. Every girl progresses at her own pace, with teaching that meets her where she is.

The Bharatanatyam Margam
From the first Tatta Adavu to the grandeur of Arangetram — every student walks the same sacred path, at their own pace, with dedicated guidance.
Initial training levels establishing balance, posture (Araimandi), and rhythm. Covers basic adavus, Asamyuktha & Samyuktha Hastas (Mudras), and Bhedas.
The opening invocation. Pure rhythmic movement indicating the gradual blooming of the dancer's body, relaxing the mind and awakening the spirit.
Introduction of Abhinaya (expressions) through the Navarasas and Shabdam, alongside pure musical form and rhythm in Jatiswaram.
Vibrant Nritta patterns, complicated footwork, and more nuanced emotion. Pushpanjali offers flowers to the divine, while Thillana brings intricate rhythmic joy.
Understanding complex Nayika Bedhas. Padam involves deep, slow-paced emotional expression, while Shiva Thandavam demands strong cosmic energy in Anandam or Rudram states.
The Varnam is the centerpiece and ultimate test, combining Nritta, Abhinaya, and Natya. This phase culminates in professional dancing ability and formal solo debut (Arangetram).
What Families Say About Us
Ms. Akalya is an absolutely exceptional Bharathanatyam teacher for young children, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have found her. We enrolled our daughter just after she turned five, and the transformation has been amazing.
Teaching foundational concepts to such young students is a challenging task, but Ms. Akalya navigates it with extraordinary patience and utmost care. She takes the necessary time, ensuring the kids remain engaged and connected to the course material in a genuinely lovable way.
The results speak for themselves: our child now genuinely looks forward to her dance class more than her school! This speaks volumes about Ms. Akalya's unique ability to foster a deep love and respect for this traditional art form.
We sincerely wish her the very best in continuing her journey, carrying the timeless Bharathanatyam art forward to upcoming generations and helping to make the art immortal. Thank you very much for your wonderful, unwavering service to the community.
We are truly grateful to have found Riya Bharatanatyam Academy for our child. The dedication, discipline, and passion that Akalya maam brings to every class are truly inspiring.
Our child not only learned the graceful movements and rich traditions of Bharatanatyam but also developed a deep respect for our culture and the classical art form. The way the teacher patiently guides each student, while ensuring individual attention, has helped build our child's confidence and love for dance.
The academy has a nurturing and positive environment where students feel encouraged to express themselves. Performances are beautifully organized and give the kids a wonderful stage experience.
Thank you, Akalya maam, for being such a motivating and kind mentor. We're proud to be part of your dance family. All the best.
My 9-year-old daughter has been learning Bharatanatyam with Akalya at Riya Bharatanatyam School. She started her dance journey during COVID-19 through online classes, and despite starting virtually, the training was so amazing that today she is able to confidently perform solo.
Akalya is such a warm and caring teacher. She treats every child like her own and always puts their safety first. When it comes to dance, she ensures that the kids are disciplined and pay proper respect to the art. My daughter has performed in three outdoor events where I had to leave her hours before the show, and I never once worried. Akalya personally makes sure the kids are comfortable, safe, and well looked after — whether parents are around or not. She even guides the makeup team and staff on how to care for the kids properly. With her, you know your child is in safe hands.
Her guidance and personal attention have played a huge role in shaping my daughter's confidence and passion for dance. I would highly recommend Riya Bharatanatyam School to anyone looking for quality Bharatanatyam training in a safe, nurturing environment.
